The Velez Mountain sits proudly above Mostar, with its peaks visible from the southern and western parts of the city. The name Velez originates from old Illyrian times, named after one of the pagan God, Veles. The highest peak is called Botin 1,969 meters above sea level.  It is impossible to describe this majestic and glorious mountain with words alone, it needs to be experienced first-hand. It is a symbol of the city of Mostar, with the famous football team proudly carrying its name since 1922.

Velež is a mountain that dominates the city center of Mostar

The Region of Mountain Velez, in south-eastern Herzegovina is an ideal spot for off-roading, hiking, climbing, mountain biking and ecotourism. Reaching the top is easiest on the west side of the mountain, and along the way we have a magnificent view of the valley of the rivers Neretva and Buna. The other paths to the top are much more demanding and for this activity we need appropriate equipment (via-ferrata kits). This zone hosts the three very important communities: Blagaj, located near the spring of the river Buna, Nevesinje, located on a vast mountainous plateau, and at the foot of the mountain Velez there is Podvelezje (as its name implies). To the east side of the towering peaks lies the highland community called Nevesinje. The vast fields, dotted with beautiful lakes and rivers, are a nature lovers paradise. The ancient villages are not only preserve their original form but are amongst the few highland communities that are still thriving in the Herzegovina region. Podvelezje plateau (700 m.a.s.l.) have moderate summer and are exposed to the coldest winters in this region.

The residents of this beautiful but pretty much empty zone are mainly into agriculture, livestock and cheese production. Uniqueness of Podvelezje is in the preservation of the old ways of life and the protection of nature. Podvelezje is the largest habitat of the rock partridge in Europe. Tourists will be pleasantly surprised to enjoy a variety of opportunities, especially lovers of trekking, climbers and hikers. You can enjoy traditional dishes and an unforgettable atmosphere where time seems to have stopped. Podvelezje plateau, first in Bosnia&Herzegovina has given support to the development and expansion of ecotourism.

Making our way east from Mostar, after a 20 minute drive up the hills by zigzag narrow asphalt road, we reached the mountain plateau of Podveležje and our first stop point, Vučija glava (the Wolf’s Head) peak. In this part of the tour it is possible to organize the zip line adventure above the city of Mostar (the longest zip line in our country). From here you could see the entire city of  Mostar in the distance, as well as the mountains and hills on the other side of the city. The next stage of the trip takes us through the heart of Podveležje plateau and will wind through pretty villages, rocky hills and arid scrubland, driving some of the best off-road tracks in the country.

After 30 min of drive including stops for breathtaking panoramic photography, we will reach the base of the mountain where the dirt road becomes very steep.   

The off-road trip involves some sections that are at a significant incline, where on a 12 km long section of the trail we must overcome 1197 m of ascent to the Brasina summit. This peak sits at a height of 1897 m above sea level. The dirt road starts in the old village Šipovac (859 m a.s.l.) and leads up to the refuge (1450 m a.s.l.) located at the bottom of the Brasina peak.The only well with drinking water is near the refuge. From this point it’s possible to enjoy the most beautiful view of the north suburb of Mostar, Bijelo Polje valley and an amazing green Neretva river.
Mountain Velez, Prenj, Cvrsnica and Cabulja are linked geographically in the set, under the base which on their southern sides is the city of Mostar, in the same level of karst field Bijelo, Bisce and Malo Polje. After this break, it’s time to leave the vehicle and enjoy hiking with beautiful views that this mountain provide all around us. 

During our driving and hiking on the Mythical Mountain Velez Tour one can enjoy the unique landscape of the Mediterranean karst, decorate with a numerous herds of sheep,  native Herzegovinian breed  “Pramenka”. We will enjoy in the smell of aromatic herbs in different seasons, diverse endemic flowers, and if we have luck we could see the wild horses in this area as well. You will have the impression that the air smells of honey. This is because this area is well known for the best quality honey. From the peak Brasina, in good weather, it is possible to see a large part of Herzegovina with the Adriatic Sea in the distance. Also here it’s possible to enjoy the unforgettable view of the many mountains in the region, such as, mountain Prenj, Čvrsnica, Čabulja, Crvanj, Visočica and Bjelašnica.

At the top we will see the remains of a military base of the army of the former state.

On our way back we will make a round trip of the Mostar area and we will have an opportunity to visit places in mountain villages where homemade food and drinks are served.
